Delete your whât data

Effective: August 18, 2026

You are in full control of your data. You can delete some of your data (individual messages, media, or a whole chat) at any time without deleting your account — or you can delete your entire account and all associated data permanently.

Delete some data (keep your account)

1. One message: long-press it in the chat → Delete → "For everyone" (or "For me").
2. Media or voice note: long-press → Delete.
3. An entire chat: long-press the chat on the home screen → Delete chat.
4. Data also expires automatically: media after 12 hours, messages after 7 days.

These deletions do not require deleting your account and take effect immediately.

Delete your entire account (all data)

Option 1 — Delete in the app (fastest)

1. Open whât on your device.
2. Go to Settings.
3. Tap Delete account (labelled "Delete everything").
4. Confirm. Your account and all associated data are deleted immediately.

Option 2 — Request by email

If you can't open the app, email us from the address associated with your whât account:

Include your whât handle (e.g. user-a3f2b1c0de) and what you'd like deleted (a specific message, a chat, or your entire account) so we can process it quickly. We respond within 30 days, and usually much faster.

What is deleted

• For a partial deletion: only the messages, media, or chats you selected.
• For account deletion: your account and anonymous handle, all messages, media, voice notes, and files (both sides of every chat), your push-notification tokens and device identifiers, and license/activation data tied to the account.

What is kept

• Nothing personal. We do not sell or share your data.
• Payment transaction records are held by our payment provider under its own retention policy (we never receive or store your card or wallet details).
• Anonymous security records (e.g. abuse/bans) may be retained without personal identifiers to protect the service.

Automatic data expiration

Even if you never delete your account, data expires automatically by design: messages are purged after 7 days and media after 12 hours.
